A fantasy church created by a Victorian eccentric
This breathtakingly decorative church was the creation of one man, eccentric clergyman Reverend Whitwell Elwin. A friend of Charles Darwin, Elwin not only raised the funds for the building, he also designed it – without the help of an architect. Borrowing a doorway style here, a window there, but with twin towers and a central pinnacle drawn purely from his imagination, he created a masterpiece. Inside, he filled his fairytale creation with angels – they appear carved on the roof beams and in the stained glass windows, all modelled on the rector’s young female friends.
